Masks

There comes a scary time of year
When everybody starts to fear
The vampires, witches, ghosts and ghouls
Who take your candy or play you like fools

But there’s something else to Halloween
The thing that’s rarely ever seen
The question no one ever asks
What’s really hid beneath those masks?

‘The vampire,’ I hear you say
‘Is darling little Adelaide,
And hiding under sheet so white,
Is Adelaide’s young brother, Mike.’

And that’s all fine, I do suppose
But the thing that no one really knows,
The one thing I’m trying to say,
Is maybe, all those masks portray

More than your taste in joke shop masks
More than the questions we think to ask
Maybe what the mask really shows
Is the soul within that no one knows.

Yet.
