Pruning My Life

There are two words hanging around my head and my life that I don’t need anymore. Not because they’re inherently bad, and please don’t thing that if you’ve used these words with me, that it was necessarily a mistake. It’s just that in light of a new year approaching, I need to prune my life, a little bit. So.

Cute
The word ‘cute’ is perfectly fine for puppies, and little heart-shaped erasers, and other small, vulnerable things. But I don’t like seeing myself as small or vulnerable. I like strong better. I like determined better. I like crazy, weird, wacko, psycho, odd, better. Anything but cute, really, because it makes me feel underestimated, and I’m not down with that. I work too hard and I strive too far and I do too much to settle for cute.

Enough
Sorry, kids, but this word is bullshit. We all know it. It always seems to have a question mark on the end when it’s floating around my head.
“Have I studied enough?”
“Is this good enough?”
“Am I working hard enough?”
“Did I say sorry enough?”
“Am I enough?”

And when it gets down to answer time, I always come up with, “I’m not enough.”

I’m over it.

Just so you know, both you and I are enough, and that’s the last time I’ll use the word, because we are more than that.

We are significant.
We are loved.
We are outstanding.
We are such majestic displays of sparkling wonder that our rainbow-glitter capes glint in the sun and blind the haters.

I’m not just cute. I’m not just enough.

I am – we all are – more than this. I mean, if you like these words, go ahead, good luck to you. I’m just saying, don’t settle for imperfect adjectives.

Oh yes, that would make a great bumper sticker.

    1. It wasn’t necessarily for the new year – I’ve thought about cutting ‘cute’ for a while as it just didn’t fit me anymore, and ‘enough’ I’ve never liked. I think that as important as it is to focus on the good, positive words, it’s also worthwhile to thing about the words, phrases and thoughts that are damaging your life. It’s a bit of give and take to find a balance.

      1. 2014 word was SHINE or “Shine On”
2015 word was ACTION (Theme: Passion)
2016 word… haven’t quite figured it out yet! I was thinking RISE (we rise by lifting others, also keep rising higher in my dreams/life) but I’m not totally sold on it yet. I like to have a focus and this year I’m focusing on dreams turning into reality (like they started to in 2015) but I guess I haven’t really been able to focus yet this year. I’ve done some writing/journaling but I can’t pinpoint a word to focus on. I just really want to find and surround myself with like-minded individuals who will empower me and I would like to inspire others as well. EMPOWER is a good word, I’ll put some thought into that! :)

        1. That’s such a good thing to do! It seems like a great way to bundle up your resolutions and goals in a way that makes them approachable. I don’t want to impose anything on you, but I like ‘inspire’ :) Whichever word you pick I think it’s a fabulous idea, when did you decide to start doing it?

          1. I found out about “One Little Word” by Ali Edwards in late 2013 and started thinking about my OLW for January 2014. I had a huge list of words that spoke to me and narrowed it down!

          2. Wow! I’m a very fickle-minded person, so I probably wouldn’t last a whole year, but I think I might try to do a monthly thing similar – it seems like a great way to remind yourself to achieve your goals. Is there a particular way you remind yourself of your word?

          3. Some people get jewelry made with their word on it (like a necklace) as a reminder. Others just print out the word and put it in a visible place where they see it daily like in their room or on the fridge. When I figure out my word, I’m getting it stamped onto a Giving Key necklace. I keep lots of journals and planners, and my word is always doodled around those things too. Hope that gives you some ideas!

          4. This fills me with inspiration! I don’t usually wear jewelry that much, so I think something silly and cute I would do is write the word or phrase on little notes and hide them around my house – and then I could find them later! A positive little treasure hunt. Thank you so much, this conversation has been absolutely enlightening!
